Artifact 1. a. - Purposes of clinical supervision

Personal Model of Supervision (p.3)

Artifact 1. b. - Theoretical frameworks and models of clinical supervision

Supervision Consultation Model

In this artifact, I describe the model of clinical supervision that fits best with my community: The Caplanian Mental Health Consultation. This model provides an efficient way to address mental health disorders when there is a lack of clinicians.

Artifact 1. c. - Roles and relationships related to clinical supervision

Supervision Reflection Paper

Summative Evaluation of Consultee

This artifact of supervision reflection allows me to discuss the roles and relationships in supervision. It is important to remember that supervision is not counselling, therefore the boundaries must be adhered to. The summative evaluation artifact shows the feedback from the consultee.

Artifact 1. d. - Skills of clinical supervision

Personal Model Supervision (p. 3-5)

In this artifact, my personal supervision model is described. Similar to my counselling theories, Solution Focused - Supervision and CBT-Supervision are discussed and integrated into the model. While the supervisor has the expertise, the SFS highlights the empowerment of supervisees-really helping them to become their own experts.

Artifact 1. e. - Opportunities for developing a personal style of clinical supervision

Personal Model of Supervision (p. 5-6)

This artifact allowed me the opportunity to reflect on what was important to me in supervisory relationship and process.

Artifact 1. f. - Assessment of supervisees’ developmental level and other relevant characteristics

Supervision Reflection Paper (p.3-5)

Summative Evaluation of Consultee

The supervision class assignments included providing supervision across the 16 weeks. This was a wonderful opportunity to put into practice the Caplanian Mental Health Consultation model. These artifacts show the summative evaluation which the consultee responded favorably. Meeting supervisees where they are at is critical and utilizing strategies to take them up the developmental ladder is the goal.

Artifact 1. i. - Evaluation, remediation, and gatekeeping in clinical supervision

Supervision Reflection Paper (p. 4)

In this artifact, I explore and describe the importance of providing accurate evaluation to the supervisee, intervening quickly if remediation is required  and overall paying attention to the person of the supervisee.

Artifact 1. j. - Legal and ethical issues and responsibilities in clinical supervision

Ethics informed consent and supervisory contract

One of the key elements that research recommends is clear boundaries, in this artifact the contract clearly outlines the responsibilities of the supervisor and supervisee

Artifact 1. k. - Culturally relevant strategies for conducting clinical supervision

Supervision Reflection Paper (p. 3)

In this artifact, cultural strategies are highlighted. Despite being from the same island, the consultee had a very different background from me. I remained non-judgemental and paid attention to what was happening within me as she described different scenarios.

Reflection

Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency.

1. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?

What I have found meaningful professionally is the consultation model of Gerald Caplan. This is largely due to having similar circumstances of living in a community where Mental Health Services are limited. My small island of Grand Bahama with a population of 45,000 has 2 private practices with a therapist including myself. As strong as my desire is to help as many individuals as possible, the consultation model provides a way for this to occur.

Personally through the class of supervision and consultation, I have embraced the idea of supervision. Generally speaking, providing supervision is something that I have stayed away from; not wanting the responsibility of it. However, I have learned that it is something that is helpful and there are many models to suit my preference. The experience does not have to be one of hierarchy and power for both the supervisor and supervisee.

2. Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?

There was an activity of recording a video with an individual for whom you would demonstrate supervision. This assignment actually allowed me to see that it is possible to create a healthy and safe supervisory relationship where discussions and constructive feedback can take place. A strength that I developed in this area is confidence in my abilities. I plan to utilize this strength through accepting the opportunities to provide supervision and not avoiding these situations.

3. Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competency. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?

An area of challenge is providing complete and honest feedback while maintaining the safe space. As a counsellor, there is a tendency to focus on safety, building a rapport, these skills become second nature and in supervision it is important that both safety and constructive feedback are present. Supervision is designed for development and understanding this to a greater extent helps me with my resolve to always provide the complete story of feedback and not just some parts that are easier for the supervisee to digest.

4. Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.

Jesus Christ was the perfect example of truth embodied in Love. Throughout scripture as we follow his life, we see the manner in which he interacted with individuals; meeting them where they are at and offering truth with grace and mercy. This is truly a personal goal as I navigate the various facets of our counselling profession. In each competency, my aim is to model grace and truth. With supervision, I want to provide an unconditional loving space where individuals are motivated to grow thus being able to hear and apply the feedback.
