Reflection

Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency.

1. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?
The Person of the Therapist by Harry Aponte. This concept resonated with me so strongly and has impacted me both personally and professionally. Even though, I have had years of counselling experience exploring the person of the therapist has been a new and exciting experience. I have become more aware of myself and what I bring to the counselling journey. It has definitely informed my private practice and contributed to my desire to develop myself in a holistic way.

2. Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?

Creating a safe space has always been a strength; but through the program I became more aware of how I could maintain a safe space and even ask the tough questions. Additionally, I have always enjoyed the holistic perspective that counselling embodied. Through the program, I learned more about somatic therapy and emotion-focused therapy which has helped me to learn techniques that enhance exploring the interaction between the mind and body. I plan to become certified in sensorimotor psychotherapy and learn more about somatic techniques, as this will improve my skill set in treating individuals who are physically stuck as well.

3. Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competency. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?

I believe that despite the many years of counselling, supervision is still helpful. This has proven to be a challenge for me because on my island there are few counsellors properly trained who can offer expertise supervision. It is my goal to stay connected through attending seminars, workshops and maintaining the network of individuals who I have met through the program.

4. Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.

Proverbs 20:5 – The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”(NIV).
This verse has always stood out as a beacon of what I hope to accomplish in my counselling practice. God has made unique and dynamic individuals, who through sin and man’s fall, are in a state of despair. While a complete heart transformation is the work of Christ, the counselling room and journey can represent the grace, mercy and unconditional love that we all so desperately need.
